Gradient Racing Spinnakers

aGradient Symmetrical Spinnakers have won more races than any other spinnaker design in history. North's proprietary Spine software creates a 3D mold that is faired both vertically and horizontally to suit the apparent wind angles for which the sail is intended. Our 3DLayout software then panels the mold with each individual piece of fabric shaped both horizontally and vertically. When laser cut from a selection of the best fabrics available (including our exclusive line of Norlons) and assembled, the result is a smooth and stable shape for undisturbed wind flow over a broad range of wind range. This is especially important for today's generation of lighter, faster accelerating boats and for boats racing under IMS or one-design class rules that limit spinnaker inventories.

SPINNAKER TYPES:

VMG Spinnaker

Typically the smallest and lightest sail in the inventory, the VMG is designed to fly when gybing downwind in light air, sailing target boat speed and wind angles.

AP RUNNER

The spinnaker of choice for windward/leeward course racing, featuring a big head and shoulders which is fast, stable and easy-to-fly. Flat water use is better served by polyester styles, rough water is better suited to nylon.

While differences in spinnaker molds may not be immediately apparent to the untrained eye, North sail designers refine proven molds/shapes to match the distribution of area, girths and profile to each particular class or yacht. New designs are optimized with North's exclusive Flow™ and Membrane™ computer simulation programs, which analyze pressure and stresses on the sail at various wind speeds and angles. With this data, the designer can create a "flying shape" that more accurately matches the designed shape. The result is a spinnaker that is fast and easy-to-fly.
