Gradient Asymmetric Racing Spinnakers
|
Gradient Asymmetric Spinnakers are direct descendants of North's dominant America's Cup and Volvo designs. The shapes were developed using our proprietary Spiral, Flow & Membrane software in conjunction with the revolutionary Twisted Flow Wind Tunnel, jointly developed by North Sails, Team New Zealand and the University of Auckland. The extensive research and testing has produced a line of asymmetric shapes that deliver more power and more stability over a broader wind spectrum, which is especially important for today's generation of lighter, faster-accelerating boats.
North Gradient Asymmetrics are available in five different "codes" that allow you to match your asymmetric to your style of racing. North's CODE 2A and 4A Runner molds, for instance, are larger and fuller than the CODE 1A, 3A and 5A Reachers, with maximum girth carried higher up in the head of the sail. This helps rotate the sail to windward, out from behind the mainsail for improved performance at the deeper wind angles commonly sailed in windward / leeward courses. |

The North Sails "coding" system is designed to make categorizing and describing downwind sails faster and more clear. The "North Code" system describes symmetric and asymmetric spinnakers according to their purpose and wind range rather than by cloth weight. Even-numbered codes are running sails, odd-numbered codes are closer angle sails. The higher the code, the higher the wind range for the sail. An "S" signifies a symmetric spinnaker. An "A" signifies an asymmetric.
